"I often get asked whether I’d recommend dashes or underscores for words in urls. For urls in Google, I would recommend using dashes. Why? To find out, let’s take a trip in the Google Time Machine. Set the dial for 1999..."

Dash is better even for visitors to understand. Still you will not get any other difference.

There is a very significant difference.

handmade-candles is read as handmade, candles and handmade candles
    handmade_candles is read as handmade_candles

Hyphens are treated as a separator. Underscores are not. Try an "allinurl" search for a quoted or unquoted two word phrase and show me just how many results have an underscore.

    allinurl:"handmade candles"
    allinurl:handmade candles

    Use hyphens.

Nice info though I am using dash in my wp blogs and they rank ok for that particular sentence. So I saying that from what I am experiencing. Any experiment done to prove what you just said?

In 2005 Matt Cutts gave a long answer to this question. While G's algo has changed since then it seems this suggestion stands.

"That’s why I would always choose dashes instead of underscores. " - Matt Cutts quote

I prefer the dash. The reason being is that it is much easier to read. When you use an underscore, the underscore gets hidden in the link because the link is underlined. While experienced marketers etc realize that there must be an underscore in that link, many people who are not internet savvy do not. So they end up typing in "go to my site.com" instead of "go_to_mysite.com".

go_to_mysite.com - no such thing. Please show me a domain name with underscores.
