Ok, I've been reading a LOT of posts on this forum and am starting to feel like I can take on creating a new web business and have a good chance at success if I keep learning all the smaller details as I go along. Anyway, I am having a really hard time deciding what type of business I want to create. I have a few different interests, but I want to make sure I create something that has the potential to bring a large audience without fierce competition and I am making that my #1 priority above my own hobbys. I've discovered it's pretty hard to settle on an idea when I never know if there's some better idea out there just around the corner, so I was thinking of trying to do something like reverse engineering with a list of the most popular keyword searches compared to the relative competition for those keywords and create a short list of the ones with the most potential, then choose a business based on one of those themes. Do you think this is a bad idea, and what would be the best tool to get exactly that kind of data? I've seen tools for finding the number of searches on a keyword you already know, but do I really have to buy a $65 report from wordtracker to get the info i am seeking?
If you select an area which you know something about you don't have to think much about keywords; you write with your normal vocabulary and those ARE the keywords people searching that subject will use. I think you have it backwards, start with your hobbies. You already know all the keywords for them. With that as the starting point the wordtracker free tool should give you all the suggestions you need.
I agree, I do have it backwards, but my fear is that I'll pick a business then find out it has no potential only after I've put a lot of work into it.
I guess I would just like to take as much risk of lost time out of it as possible, but I'm not sure if this is a smart way to come up with a business idea, so maybe I'm just waisting my time trying to figure out a great idea and should dive into something. But it seems like my backwards idea might just work. I wonder if there is anyone who has taken this approach to coming up with an idea, and how it turned out.
