Except from submission fees and AdSense(or other similar) is there anything else directories get money from?

Beyond normal submission fees for links, there are also ROC (Run of Category) or ROS (Run of Site) links. Depending on your site, those can be a nice bit of revenue.

However, you may be better off using the DP Co-op links.

ROC - a link on every page in a category in your directory
ROS - (not just directories - any website) a link on every page of the website

All our money is made on submission.

PPC ads and Affiliate ads just crap up directories and the click through rate is very minimal.

Not exactly true. I make very decent money with my regional portal, with about 98% of the revenue coming from my directory.

That being said... I populate my directory with the links. I go out and find them, make sure they are worthwhile, and submit them myself. I would say of the 2500 links, I have submitted atleast 2475.

Back to the point though - If you are willing to put in the time to make your directory unique and authoritative - it will become profitable - either with featured links or PPC.

theres always co-op... directories do seem to build a few pages.. so theres always the case of a little weight.

That is most likely the best option - get some co-op links into your directory and use the weight to help build the directory up. Or rent the space in you directory for someone to run co-op links on.

Well for niche directories I supposed PPC might be rather successful depending on how you implement the ads. In your case for instance :)

I do know general directories dont' do too well w/ PPC ads.

IMO... the only good affl. program for a directory... is another directory.

    What type of affiliating?

Never thought of doing affiliating for a directory.

    Thanks :)

Other Directories. There are some out there that pay decent numbers. We are actually thinking about adding an affl. program to Site Sift.

For selling ROS & ROC you might try advertising in text link services (ie linkworth etc...)
