I've added a few PayPal buttons to a website for purchasing an item. I know how to do this. I now need to do the same but I need to know if there is a way to get a return value from PayPal when a user purchases an item and then is return to my site. When a user is sent to PayPal to checkout and they submit a payment. It is successful. Then they are returned to my site. Is there a value that PayPal returns that I can use to trigger off a special email to my user? If yes, can someong point me to where I can read up on this? Thanks for any tips.
Hi there, you can use Paypal's IPN (Instant Payment Notification). It will post the user's payment data, including their email address to a php script that you define. You can then verify the payment was completed and send an email to their posted address. This all happens independently of the return page for the customer. Do a search at google for Paypal IPN Guide and it will be the first result. Sorry, i can't post links yet. Hope that helps
Thanks, But I'm still a little confused. When you say "This all happens independently of the return page for the customer.", can you explain that briefly. I will look up the IPN payment method in PayPal. A user clicks a button to go and pay on PayPal. The user's payment data gets sent to a script I define. I take it I write a script on the website that has the purchase button. Is this like a webpage? The user gets taken back to a different site post-payment, right? Sorry for my confusion. This is the first time getting into this on paypal, although I've done the purchase/paypal buttons before. Just not had to deal with any return values.
found a good tutorial on how to do this: net. tutsplus. com/ tutorials / php/ using-paypals-instant-payment-notification-with-php/ also downloaded a 75 page pdf from paypal. I like the tutorial better. thanks for the help
