Nice idea to test this one

I still do some of it - even tho it is "supposed" to be a waste of time - it all depends whether I'm in a rush or not

I look forward to the results

The results are in. The page has been up for 5 days and has been indexed by Google.

The page found by the content:

    "A simple test page." edsolutions

So go back and click on those links again now that you know that the page has been indexed by Google and can be found by searcing the non-commented keywords.

Wouldn't it be easier to simply work your words into the actual content?

I had just tested those links and got a nil result for all

So I have retested and got nil response again - which means that G has picked up the title with "freshbot" [which is normal] and now you will have to wait.

Shawn is right tho - although I add it in as I said above - I still believe that text is better.

    But we may see ;)

You are correct, it is easy to work the words in into content. This test was mainly to put to rest that Google does not include keywords surrounded by comments.

The page is fulled indexed and the keywords do not show in the results. The "A simple test page." is indexed by Google, but the keywords in the comments are not.

So, may we take that for proven that contents of comments are NOT indexed after all?

I agree with Shawn in that it is certainly better to adjust text for particular keywords. However, if comments were taken into account by G! this would simply give one additional degree of freedom. Especially for very competitive keywords (unfortunately I do have several of them, e.g. Coach and Coaching) it would offer additional opportunity to enhance keyword density without making the visible text too clumsy. :p

It sure seems like commented keywords are not included. I will leave the test page up for months to see if there is any change. You may keep checking.

I would have been totally surprised if Google had index these pages for any of those entries. Comment tags are supposed to be used for the programmer to make comments on what, why and how he is coding. They are not content of the page. They are simply comments.

Google understands html. A comment is not content. They would be stupid to index for it. And Google isn't stupid.

It's an interesting test, but the result are completely predictable in my mind.

I'm pretty sure they would want to understand HTML pretty well before they move on to understanding other things (which they are doing with PDF, Flash, JavaScript, etc.)

Ahh, but you are wrong. They did index it not too long ago.

Also, nothing is stupid when attempting to get all possible keywords from a page. I've met a lot of designers who put some page specific keywords in comments not to optimize, but just reminding themselves what the page's main focus is.

I don't know if it is still the case, but I remeber finding one of my pages long ago based on some code I had commented out. Of course, it could have been indexed before I commented it out. :)

I tend to agree with Bob.
