Resources for disclaimers and privacy policies

Does anyone know of any good sites that offer examples and advice on disclaimers and privacy policies for web sites? It seems to me that there must be some generic examples that can cover most web sites.

Any info and / or advice is greatly appreciated.

Go to any large web site that has funding and is related to your industry and take a look at what they have written. They will likely have funding to create something professionally.

Good legal documents are specifically tailored to the type of site you run. In many instances, unless you understand the terms you may be stuck with them. There is no "one size fits all" that just works. It's like buying clothing - different stuff will fit but some people like it skin tight, others like it really baggy and loose, and some fashion statements are just plain bad taste, lol!

Do you hire a lawyer or a content writer for something like this? and how much does it usually cost? for example how much would it cost to create one like ebay.

It varies by experience, state/location and also the depth of services. For a beginning site a decent attorney should have some templates to work with and could likely craft a basic one with terms of service for a few hundred dollars. Again, it's tough to say and it's like asking "how much will a doctor cost me?" If you're really putting money behind the site and making a big effort, it could be very worth it - especially when the complainers and people with time on their hands come after you.

If you tell me more maybe I can help you get an idea.

This is indeed a good resource. A better approach compare to wandering around other people's websites :)

We must not copy the policy run by others, wheather large or small, we must create our own and unique copy!

Thanks for this link, it will be useful for me too. :D

    Thanks BasedSolutions.

That looks like a great resoure. If nothing else it's a good starting point.

Now, is there anything similar for disclaimers?

Thanks a lot friend. I was really looking for this one. And it is better then going on reading blah blah blah of other sites and then making our own.

You will do FAR better looking at backed sites that have had REAL PEOPLE (attorneys) analyzing the SAME ISSUES you are dealing with. Generators are a nice guide and can provide assistance and insight but will never be as good as a a policty that has had a first hand review by a human professional. The same thing for disclaimers.

    No problem :)

I believe this is a good starting while developing something more personal

This is a very basic, general disclaimer but it might work for you as well: www.easyriver.com/free_disclaimer.htm

Privacy policies, disclaimers, user agreements and so on, is there any copyright laws for this? or are we free to use policies that are already out there for our own benefits, ofcourse rewriting it so it suits our best interest. Thanks

Also thanks for the generator, but it doesn't really suit my needs. That seems like a basic privacy statement for community sites, shopping carts. Yet our system is unique and we will need our own terms of services , privacy policies and user agreements.

As said before, these are basic documents that give you an idea on how such information should be displayed.

However for special purposes you need to adequate the content, whether rewritten whatever needs to be changed, hiring an attorney or skilled writer, otherwise browsing for pre-made forms to see if any matches your needs.

A DP member has a very good site plenty of free forms to browse for: www.legalforms.name

This is getting hotter. All wonderfull resources in this small thread :)

DONKON: Once you had the basic framework on how to display the information, it is much easier to add or delete few terms and make it suitable for theme of the site.

BasedSolutions: Do you have something for TOS too?
