How can one make residual income off of SEO?

The client should be charged monthly especially if it is their main keyword. They're making money. Why shouldn't you?

    Thoughts?

The Telephone Directory is printed once per year, but the charges recur monthly. If your business can charge your clients monthly then go for it. I have heard of but do not know of first hand relationships where the client gets a piece of the pie based on performance. You would need to look into that with your clients on a case by case basis - similar to an affiliate type of agreement for performance.

Updating content is always good for SEO, make that a part of your offering...charge for your continued work on adding fresh new content.

Very true.... this is key I think in the process of building residual income off of seo. Not all clients are going to be able to afford to pay $100.00 or $1000.00 a month for the position you get them in.

Some sort of pricing system needs to be applied as you expand and achieve new rankings for the list of the key terms you/they want to rank for. Then whats the guarantee? After they fall from the position you get them in do they still have to pay the same rate that month?

    Any thoughts on that one?
