Researching Products, Niches, Trends and Keywords - Going beyond Googles Keyword Tool

    Hey guys. :)

What methods (orthodox or otherwise) do you use for finding valuable niches to make sites about, subjects to blog about, keywords to push, or products to promote within a chosen niche? (etc)

I recently discovered Googles "Wonder Wheel", and I'm looking forward to experimenting with it more for finding keywords (and possibly domain names).

Another interesting thing I recently stumbled upon is Googles "freshness algorithm" or "QDF" (Query Deserved Freshness), which in effect ranks sites better when they have new content about hot topics.

Interestingly, Twitter Trends can apparently indicate which words Google is using QDF on at any given time (to some degree)

Probably most of you here know about google trends search...

There is a Titter equivalent also here:
    http://trendistic.com/

This is great when you already know what words or phrases you want to analyze, but what about when you want to find out what people are talking about?

Just like Google Trends, Twitter displays "hot topics", which is potentially very useful, especially if you want to take advantage of QDF.

But most of us think in more long term timeframes. What I've not yet found is tool which shows the most trending searches on Google, or topics on Twitter, over a longer period of time. Perhaps someone knows of something that does this?
Closest thing I can find is:
    http://www.trendingtopics.org/

I'm hoping to get some discussion going here about the multitude of ways which people can do SEO research, without relying on Googles Keyword Tool.

    Thanks for any replys.

    1. Wonderwheel is important
    2. Google Keyword Tool is important
    3. Yahoo - Overture

But... all these are secondary sources

you have to know which niches people are interested in and willing to spend money in.... Then you use those above tools to find the correct keywords

There are 5 key places (and you need to know them all) to find the perfect niche.

    -Good Luck
