Research on PPC vs top ten rankings

Currently we only advertise our company on PPC, however we are currently attempting to increase our natural listing position.

Does any one have any idea or research on how many people who type something into google choose a natural link over a PPC link and the other way around.

We have researched this subject for our own clients with keyword terms that have a no. 1 listing in both Natural Results and Adwords. The Natural Results had 3 times as many clicks as the Google Ads. That being said, these results will change, depending on the Ad, the Natural "clippings", the type of product being sold, etc. Other research I have seen shows a 2 to 1 advantage for the Natural Results. By the way, if you have both Adwords and a good natural position, their is a synergy which causes the total amount of clicks to be higher that if you added the expected results separately.

    Hi !

    First post here :D

There was a study few month ago by 7search, i think it was pretty accurate. It shows what percentage of the traffic will click on ads against organic results depending on the PPC bid position:

    1st. 2nd. 3rd. 4th. 5th. 6th. 7th. 8th.
    7% 3.75% 2.5% 1.75 % 1.25% 0.75% 0.60% 0.50%

Hope it helps, however from experience and considering all the parameters involved, it would be fair to say that more than 80% of the clicks go to the organic SERP.

Interesting quetion. The organic listings definitely get more traffic because they are more spreadout on the internet (other search engines results etc). However the convertion on our PPC listings is higher than our organic listings. We try to get as many organic and ppc listings as possible, but of course the offer has to convert.
    Thank you,

You will definitely get more click through for natural search results on Google, as opposed to Adwords (IMO). Plus, if you work hard there's no cost for high SERPs! :D

But, not if you are using something like Overture, as Overture places sponsored listings above natural search results and both kinds of listings are kinda merged into the same list. So, I reckon you will definitely get more click throughs if yoy are using PPC on Overture.

But, it's also important to consider with re to Google, that although you might not receive heaps of traffic via Adwords, the traffic that you DO receive will be quality traffic and you will be able to get a good coversion rate for this category of visitors.
