There's alot of people out there on ebay and webmaster marketplaces such as here and sitepoint that sell ebooks, scripts, databases, etc, and claim that they come with resale rights. Now, I'm confused here - is this legal? So if I was to start a website selling these items with 'resale rights' I can be a legitimate business? OR do these people do it and get away with it because of the anonymity of the internet and doing dealings through third party sites doesn't really get noticed by bigger institutions? For example, I recently obtained a package with 'resale rights' and there was a database of song lyrics. Now these lyrics are copyright, and some websites have been forcibly made to remove song lyrics because of copyright infringement, and people are selling a whole database of them... Thoughts on legality of this?
Resale and resell rights for scripts and eBooks are sold all the time and it is 100% legal for you to resell legally acquired products. I sell them on a couple of different sites and all the newer stuff has a clearly defined license included with it. Sometimes the "master resale rights" (MRR) is used to mask a gpl product that has been reworked. Again this is fine. In the specific example you used above I think there might be some loophole about using the lyrics for education purposes but it is not an area that I would care to exploit. In fact I got several of those lyrics databases along with some others and have never sold or used the first copy because I just don't need the potential hassles. You should always be prepared to bend over when you buy stuff on Ebay (and some of the stuff sold here at DP) as much of it is nulled or warez scripts.
