Requests redirected to invalid domain

Whenever I try to access my site from anywhere even using the IP address, it immediately redirects to an invalid site:

    http://department.domain.com

    to

    http://www.departmentdomaincom.local

Does anyone know what can be causing this?

Misconfiguration would be the obvious choice, but without knowing more about your set up there isn't much people can do to advise you.

Thanks, Martin. It may not help much but it's the default set up, no modifications whatsoever. I'm not very familiar with Apache. Any direction you can give me to go from here would be great.

If you haven`t made any changes then it may not be configured at all... it would depend on the type of hosting you have and the service level you have with the hosting company.

Is this a shared hosting account ala hostgator.com?
    A VPS account?
    Or a dedicated server?

It's a dedicated server. There's no hosting company. I have full access and rights to the server, including physical access to it. After a closer inspection today, it looks like it's been hacked too. I found some files that certainly weren't put there by me.

I see, so your trying to set this up yourself on your own machine in your home / office?

If so then that's probably going to be beyond my capabilities. There are so many things that could be affecting it, ranging from being hacked to a misconfiguration on the router to problems with the OS. I'm more used to working with dedicated set ups where the hosting company has taken care of all the machine set up and network config leaving me to go in and sort out the OS and various applications I want to run.

If you tell me what OS your running I can try and give you some pointers which you can check out to make sure they are configured correctly, otherwise you may be better off with a forum more dedicated to this kind of thing.

It's through the university and the university has already configured the network for me. The site was working. It actually intermittently works now. The only thing I can do to get consistent results is to put up an index page in the root web directory with links to the other web locations.

To complicate matters more, it's on a Mac (not my choice). Mac comes with Apache, so I just enabled it a while back and it worked until now.

I appreciate all your help. I might just have to see whether I can get a help desk guy to come check it out. The problem is that they're not too helpful when it comes to software-specific issues.
