[Request] MySQL Database Hosting

Alright, here's my situation. A friend of mine who's in charge of the club website of a university club plans to run a Wordpress blog on it.

The thing is, the university is giving hosting space, but not a MySQL database. So we have to find a MySQL database externally. We've found a couple of free ones (such as freemysql.net and free-mysql.bizhostnet.com) but they seem pretty unreliable.

So we're planning to purchase a MySQL database (just 1). Does anyone know of a cheap MySQL Database host?

Please note - We are only looking for a MySQL database host. We don't want any disk space, fantasico, cPanel or anything else since it's already hosted on the university server.

Xuxa, in case you're too desperate to suck in a customer, I suggest you read my post clearly before pouncing on me and trying to drag me in.

I DO NOT NEED DISK SPACE, CPANEL, OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. ALL I NEED IS A MYSQL DATABASE

I don't see who will sell you a MySQL database, those sites you have in your first post are specialized, and I'm afraid that the software is not redistributed.

How are you going to come and request 1 Database? When a host is supposed to have unlimited or 5 at minimum.

Just to chime in here I think what you're doing is really illadvised. Here is why

    - The database data now has to pass through the internet. Depending on the latency you could see pages taking 5+ seconds to load
    - Security the data is now going across the internet

So basically you really need mysql being on the machine itself or being connected to a mysql server that is on the same internal network.

That's unfortunately something we can't do. The university has refused us on 5 occasions for a MySQL database.

Xuxa, take a look at the sites I quoted, they're free, but they use phpmyadmin to access and modify the database.

Well then I'd just buy a full web hosting package as you're going to pay the same price as you would just for mysql hosting. Then you don't have the worries I mentioned above.

For various reasons, we have to keep our current subdomain name as a subdomain of the university's guild. They do not allow us to modify the DNS, so we're stuck as it is.

Look, we're happy to pay $1-2 a month to get the MySQL database hosted IF your server allows for an external site to access your MySQL database. I've found that many of the hosts I'm with do not allow this to work.

Any cPanel host (90% of hosts are cPanel) allow you to do outside mysql connections. It should be under the Access Hosts heading which is found in the mysql page.

Well you can use any of our packages and we do not restrict you from allowing your mysql accounts to go outside of the server.

external mysql database, that will be a slow websites at the end.
its not recommend to host it this way. And the uptime will easily fall below 99.5%... due to connection issue from the University server to the distant mysql server

recommend to get a hosting account. and run them together.
