Request: Marketing Ideas for a Friend's Company

    Hey everybody, my friend has a company that focuses on consumer research in the US. They collect transaction data and identify trends in consumer spending. This information is then used to advise big brands on how to better cater to their consumers.

    The challenge now is to acquire more US consumers to sign up and share their shopping experiences. They compensate each member with up to $240 a year for sharing their information. Any recommendations on creating awareness and driving more consumers to sign up for the site?

    We've considered the following:
    • Buying email lists
    • Referral program for current members
    • Adwords

    Use social media!!! When you advertise that the compensation is $240 a year you should be able to go viral with your social media campaign! Especially in this time.

    Hmm.. unless your friend is already an experienced online marketer, i wouldn't recommend PPC.

    As Giamatti have said above, social media is probably your best option. Also, you can try forums as well.

    Build some decent high converting landing pages, and start your promotion from there.

    Start a Twitter promotion offering a free Apple iPad, Google Nexus, or Samsung Tab 2 as the grand prize for people who sign up on your site. Make sure to mention they can also earn up to $240 by signing up free. (Would any of their clients donate cool products for a promotion like this?)

    Make sure you get the contest promoted with the right hashtags, and try to get it listed on contest and giveaway websites. Do some press releases announcing the contest. Make sure the contest is promoted via your Facebook page and gets mentioned in Facebook Groups.

    If the budget allows it do a contest that offers several levels of prizes, something like this:
    • Grand Prize - Apple iPad
    • Second Prize - Samsung Tab 2
    • Third Prize - Google Nexus 7"
    • Fourth Prize - Amazon Kindle Paper White
    • Fifth Prize - Sylvania Touchscreen MP3/Video Player
    Make sure the contest is scheduled to finish in 4 to 6 weeks to create a little urgency to sign-up.
    I'd bet your cost of doing a contest like this will be much less than Adwords or buying email lists, and has a much higher chance of going viral and getting you a ton of new sign-ups.

    This screams "Facebook Ads" to me.

    Start a Facebook ad campaign targeting people in the US who are interested in Shopping.

    To make it even better, create a fan page and fan-gate it. (i.e. ask users to "Like" to access the form)

    With the prize incentive, this should get you a lot of fans + signups.
