We have a thread on the reputation system going here at DP that has had over 2,000 views and has generated some heated responses from some members.

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=7964&page=4&pp=40

This issue seems to come up every 3 months or so and folks get fired up about it and basically state the same opinions of the reputation reporting system every time a new thread is started.

So I am starting a poll with this thread so members can tell us why the system is good, bad or ugly.

My vote: Leave it the way it is and stop obsessing about it. Remember Rick Nelson's song, Garden Party:

As I said before, if you get to the point where protecting your reputation points are more important that stating your opinions, you need to find another hobby anyway. Say what you have to say and if annoys somebody, so be it. And if it turns out that you are annoying pretty much everyone, it's probably important to know that too.

Seems like a lot of talk about something that in essence affects one member. The comments aren't public so there is an easy solution that doesn't require a vote or a major change....Don't look at them. I could understand if people were losing signatures or live links and that was important to them but that isn't even happening!

Fine as it is but an improvement would be to automaically show the username of who left the feedback and have a minimum character count.

Feedback is only feedback if it contains text.

Reputation System Poll 01-24-2005 03:06 AM Get over it already

Some smart ass (I know who it was) gave me neg. rep for this thread when I just wanted to get the pulse of the members.

This goes to show that hot heads and smart asses do abuse the system and it should have a human review.

Forum is about discussion and some folks think things should not be discussed on forum.

How about the comment "Get over it already"

Not true, TOPS30. It may be more informative if it includes text but if I get a blank anonymous negative vote from someone it is certainly feedback: I do know that someone has objected to either something I wrote or the fact that I exist on this forum and I do know the post that prompted that person to give me the negative vote.

Here is the deal Minstrel, if the system was fair it would have a human review by a moderator to be sure members are not being given bad rep for vindictive or unreasonable reasons.

There should be a reason given with the bad rep. and a explanation of why that comment should be given negative points.

First, human review isn't going to happen. Before you know it, this forum would be backed up like DMOZ.

Second, while I agree it would have been nicer if the individual had said that in open forum, you and a few others ARE going on and on about something that is nothing. I didn't give you the "negative rep" but I will echo the sentiment: Get over it. There are more important and more interesting issues.

    1. There are already limits in the system. If I have a personal beef against you, I can give you a negative vote. But I can only do that once. So if you accumulate a lot of negative votes, it is not just one person who is objecting to you or your votes -- it has to be a lot of different people.

    2. It appears from the results of your own poll that approaching 90% of DP members think it's fine the way it is. Another reason to "get over it" and move on to something else, I would think.

I understand that, AC. I was obviously interested enough to read the original thread and to follow the link to this one with the poll. But really, by now it is flogging a dead horse.

How do you figure...I see 150 views

Regardless, I don't see the abuse. You seem to be the only one affected as I have said and you have to agree that you cross the line from time to time. Existing members may know that its all talk but I would say the majority of new members don't know that.

I suspect most of your bad rep comes from them and human intervention won't change your red from green. I will echo Minstrels comment and agree that you should just get over it.

PS> I will say that it seems two things get you a good ranking ->
    1.) Posting something funny and
    2.) Flaming Anthony

Minstrel, I do think the entire thing is funny, it takes away from the value of the forum, but it has become part of the fabric of Digital Point at the same time.

Like I have said before, these threads are started by different members every 3 months or so and I give mostly the same answers to them and so does VS.

It seems like a DP tradition to discuss this and yes, it may get old after a while but it seems to get the membership going each time and we get good threads out of it for some odd reason.

Maybe that is why I just let out a big laugh :p :p :D

It does produce entertaining threads many times, I will conced that. But why add a poll. If it continues to play out like it is, will you just link to this thread every 3 months when someone starts a new one?

I would think the current results would put this thing to rest.
