I've reported a competitor of mine to Google who is using doorway pages/cloaking. Based on your experience, how long does it take until the site will get kicked? Or is there even a chance that they will get away with it?
It varies a great deal. I get the impression that Google prefers to use the spam reports to find spamming patterns and then update its algo. I do a batch of spam reports each day for our top keyphrases, and it takes time - but you come in one morning, and suddenly whole chunks of spammers vanished at once. The algo was obviously updated. That makes me feel very good.
I have been reporting one site for almost 2 years now, with no results. http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html must be a dummy form...
I have reported a competitors site for spamming about 5 times in the last 2 months with no effect. I have used both the .com spam report page and the webmaster tools one. My college successfully got a site removed from the index for keyword stuffing but about a month later the site was back, exactly how it was before and in the same position. Its a shame really because these spamming sites DO actually do better in the SERPs than us, hard working people!
I'm pretty sure the spam reports are only used for adjusting the algorithim, not for hand-to-hand manual combat. The only time I've seen actual action is when a site or group of sites are publically called out in forums, like: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=97090 or Google Webmaster Help Post In both of those cases the offending sites were down within days. Someone needs to start a public site that lets people log and document the spam reports they send to google, then follows up with the action or no-action on their part. If we made it a site with enough visablility, I bet you'd see some more hand to hand combat.
Don't use the spam report thing. Contact Google using the webmaster contact form and it will have a punch box which is something related to what your talking about(sorry can't remember exact terms). Just about always they remove the sites I submit. Also if the site is breaking adsense/adwords TOS submit through that and they will get deleted much faster. Anyone who says Google only cares about moeny and makes money off from spam is a total idiot because whenever I submit a report(using adsense webmaster contact form) the site is usually gone within hours(anywhere from 5-24 hours). I have only had a few sites that weren't deleted when I submitted a report.
