Rental software is hoping to help make Linux a mainstream choice for gamers, with TransGaming Inc. renting its Codega gaming platform to Linux users and bundling it with MandrivaLinux 2007, along FlatOut from Empire Interactive.

The Codego engine, which has flavors available for other Linux variants under U.S. $5 per month or $55 per year rental agreements, lets Linuxers play numerous titles which were previously only available to Windows users. Games which work under the system include: Battlefield 2, World of WarCraft, Civilization IV, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Madden 2006 and so forth.

It is disappointing that game makers believe that because Linux is available for free, users need to pay a tax to play their games. People who buy Windows do not need to pay a monthly rental fee to play Civilization IV and other major games. This becomes a hidden expense to adopting Linux and will discourage people, like myself, who do not believe they should pay a rental fee on top of the purchase price of a game for the right to play it.
