Renewing domains

So, am I correct in thinking that how long you renew your domain name for has an influence on rankings? If so, what do you recommend?

I have a domain where I am just setting up a simple site. No idea if it will make money or not. Would you recommend renewing for more than 1 year? If so, for how long?

Just curious on other peoples thoughts on this one.

    Thanks,

    Jon

I think it makes sense to renew the domain for the minimum time period. If the site gives you good returns then you can renew it for a longer period.

Isn't this the case of the chicken and the egg? I could wait and see what happens after doing it for the minimum and then increase the registration period. But then I might not get a good ranking BECAUSE of the minimum registration period.

Who told you that domain registration period has an effect on the ranking?

If affordable, then sure, otherwise don't worry about it I reckon it plays a very minimal role in determining rankings.

Didn't Google take out a patent on that idea as a means for ranking?

I think it's more like they got into bed with some of the larger domain registrars.

Tagging all one year registrations as spam, seems ludicrous to me.

No one is saying they are tagged as spam. But they might have a slight weighting in the algo. That would make sense to me. A spammer is less likely to register a domain for 5 years than a legitimate site.
