Removing top level catgories - Will it harm SEO?

I am placing this Wordpress question here because I want "real" help from people who understand SEO.

My travel site (listed in my sig) uses that dreaded extra "category/" in the urls. Added to that I have another level not being used in the url "/destinations"

I want to know what harm it will do to move everything up one level and remove the "destinations" level. Is there a way to do this without not harming SEO?

    Thanks

It should not harm your existing result on SERPs provided you implement 301 redirects to the new URLs. In due time, SEs will take note of the new URLs and update their index accordingly.
