Removing old links from sitemaps

Hello, I have a question related to the building of sitemaps.

I am using wordpress and one of my blogs is starting to grow very big in terms of numbers of posts, so the generation of a sitemap consumes quite some resources. So in order to reduce that resource consumption, I was thinking if it would be a good idea to remove old posts from the sitemap (basically limiting the sitemap do display only 1500 posts, let's say). Would this affect the way the search engines look at my website? Will it have an effect on the posts left outside, even if they are at the moment indexed? Or it would be OK to do so?
