Removing a keyword in the title. will it hurt?

Say my title is Headless chicken | Sad & Funny chickens

Headless chicken,Sad chickens,funny chickens are my keywords

Now I only want to have Headless chicken and Funny chicken in my title. If I remove the word Sad,will I fall in google ratings or should I jump up?

Someone told me that changing the title is a big no no

I theory you should gain a better ranking as your keyword density rises.
Changing your title in general is not a problem. It can be a problem if you do it frequently.
Some say you should not change it more than once a month.
My personal recommendation is not to change it more than once in three month, because it shakes your rankings every time you do it for a while.

 

I've seen my site temporarily drop out of the index after a title rewrite and I think that this is a technical glitch which resolves itself quickly. Don't change anything else at the same time you change the title, and you should be fine. The danger is looking like a dropped domain, but with the same content and similar title, there should be no issues.

As noted above, this will obviously hurt your rankings for "sad chicken". 4 searches according to Wordtracker. No great loss.

 

Google and other search engines more focus on Title Tag than any other tags.
Especially Google counts first 65 characters of your web page very strongly.
SEOspeaks is right, it will surely affect your rankings for the keyword you want to remove.

No no, I actually don't want to be ranked for Sad Chicken. I was just wondering if I'll rank better without it for other 2 of my keywords

Not exactly a torrent of traffic when you split hits with 9 other sites on the first page + adsense. That top site for headless chicken (miketheheadlesschicken.org) has sitelinks and PR5. They'll be tough to beat and so you shouldn't expect too much traffic on these keywords.
For funny chicken, top site is Burger King...good luck beating them.
If you must depend on these keywords, I'd recommend "Funny Headless Chicken" after a key phrase that will be worth your time.

You would. Though as pointed out earlier by someone else, you might want to target better keywords in your title, and focus on the two you're going for within your page copy.

 

That's funny, I've been running around pranking people all day, and then I go and get pranked when you're not even trying!

I've put more time than my partner would want to know trying to figure out why the hell someone would go after the "humorous chicken" niche.

Of course, if you really were targetting chickens, I'd suggest you go after
"rubber chicken" to build your funny chicken empire around. 390 searches.

you'll simply not be able to target the keyword "sad chicken", and you will not show up in results for this keyword. the Title Tag is one powerful and important element in SEO. On the other hand, it's good to have moderately long tails in your tags, because they generate more demand = higher traffic.

 

While also diluting the strength of the keywords you ARE trying to target, SEOnotes. Which is why long titles are generally a VERY BAD IDEA.

I am not selling pills, or pharmacy. I don't need visitors for my niche. While you guys are are trying to get 10K visitors, to sell ads,penis pills,etc I really need only 1-2 visitor a month.

Plus if someone is dropping a keyword,doesn't that mean,nobody searches for it??

 

Not sure I believe in this "diluting" effect, Dan. A word is either present in the title tag or it is not. The closer to the beginning of the tag the stronger it will be, but adding secondary kw to the end of a title tag can be effective as well.

For example, my site is #1 for this search and #2 for this search.

Notice the first term doesn't even appear exactly on the page, only "fantasy" in the title. After six or seven other words.

 

What I noticed, if you are really high for some keywords you are targetting, you'll be up for other keywords too.
Like I may not target "chicken soup" but you'd rank for it as well. Maybe not as high,but still

 

If you are using a phrase "Sad chicken", definitely it will affect in your ranking.
