I'm using an image as site logo on a blue background. How to remove the square whitespace around the graphic?

    Appreciate that. That's simple enough.

Thats cool. Do you mean just open the image and then save again as png?
There is another way where you can use the magic wand and click on the white spaces and delete them.

he used magic want to cut it out and saved the file as a .png as opposed to a .psd thats all. this also works if you save as a .gif you can keep background transparent ;)

If you have access to the source file and wish to retain the gif format then you'll be wanting to save it to a specific matte. The matting will be the colour of the background that you are applying the image onto.

Matting options can be found in the save for web menu in photoshop. Just giving you another alternative. I would just personally save it in the png format.

The pen tool might be a good choice if you don't have access to the source file. or as others mentioned the wand tool at a fairly low tolerance level could be used if the background is one single colour and doesn't select over the actual image.
