In Islam picture of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and other Humans are not allowed. But Wikipedia editors are showing illustrations with face illustrated and face is veiled or white washed.

But still they are offensive to Muslims. I request all brothers and sisters to sign this petitions so we can tell Wikipedia to respect the religion and remove the illustrations.

This is a peaceful protest against ONLY the picture of Prophet. We are not against wikipedia at all. Its a great site, but the only thing they have done is the Picture of Prophet. They know that pictures of Prophet is not allowed in our religion so they should respect it.

And those who kill innocent people (Osama, alqaeda..etc) they are NOT true muslims at all. They just use the name of Allah and Islam to rule their own laws. They don't do exactly what Islam says. I don't call them Muslims. They have no religion.

Wiki has the rights to freedom of speech as much as any Muslim has theirs. Wiki is also a peaceful non profit organization. Also Wiki is non religion organization especially non Muslims organization, only Muslims are subjected to Islamic teachings and laws, but as Wiki is not, they are not subjected to such. Therefore Wiki publishing of the Prophet illustration does not in anyway breach the laws of anyone. You are definitely obligated to obey your own laws, just as Wiki is obligated to obey the laws of the place where they registered their non profit entity.

Why should they? Wikipedia isn't a member of your religion. Those rules only apply to you.

The OP is only asking people to sign a petition. Please remember that before you throw your 2 cents in.

Then stop trying to get western companies to deny my rights to freedom.

I have a very simple solution for you. If you don't want to see a picture of Mohammad, then don't go to wiki. Pretty easy isn't it? And that way, I don't have to lose any of my freedoms and you are not offended.

What next, do you want all pictures of Mohammad taken out of US libraries and museums?

asking wiki to remove the pictures is trying to impose your religion's rules onto others. If your religion prohibits you from drawing the pictures just don't do it. The rule doesn't apply to others.

It like asking liquor stores and restaurants to throw away all alcoholic drinks because islam forbids alcohol consumption.

Perhaps some people are confused because religious rules are also laws in their theocratic systems, but that doesn't happen everywhere (fortunately)

IMHO, they should remove the illustration. Much like "miserable failure" thingy, it might bother a person or a group of them (here the Muslims). ;)

why should I be denied access to knowledge because it hurts your feelings? If you have a middle ages mentality why don't you simply use middle ages technology too?! That way you won't have to encounter the blasphemous wikipedia.

This isn't any different to people complaining about obscene images or profanity if that's what offends them. Admittedly the subject matter is based on religious grounds in this case and isn't on the same level by any means but the general idea is the same - if people find stuff offensive then they have every right to complain about it. Why is the OP getting a hard time for asking people to sign a petition about something he finds offensive?

because nothing should be removed from wikipedia because someone finds it offensive. Why should we be denied the knowledge simply because someone finds it offensive? Last time I checked nobody forced anyone to visit wikipedia. If you don't like it you don't go there. It's as simple as that.

I support his right to ask, and petition wiki all he wants.

But, I do not need just watch him and hope it comes out the way I want. I am opposed to his goal, as I am opposed to those who seek to censor anything I view. And I, like him, have a right to express my opinion to wiki and to him and most importantly in this thread to anyone considering signing his petition by virtue of seeing this thread.

I think you'll always find resistance to this type of thing in the United States and other parts of the western world because it is a concept that goes against our fundamental freedoms. We are taught from an early age that the government cannot take away certain rights from the people. Expression through a painting or a drawing is something that cannot be taken by force, nor can the creator be punished, except in rare instances where it is a direct threat against an individual (and it would have to be proven to truly be a "threat") or if falls under the area of harassment (like sending an ex-wife drawings of her being mutilated).

I understand that you are only asking people to sign a petition, but I think you'll find that not only will many people not want to sign such a petition, but some would be just as vigilant in having the images put back up if they were taken down.

Although some drawings of Mohammad are understandably offensive, such as the one published in the Danish newspaper (although still not likely to be censored by the western world), others clearly fall into the domain of religious art. There was even a time when some Muslims recognized these depictions as art. Like all religions, Islam has evolved over the centuries. Images of Mohammad have not always been forbidden by all sects of Islam. In fact, some depictions that have survived the centuries were created by Muslims. Even politely asking for these images to be removed will likely just lead to more images being uploaded, and a lot more discussion about resisting the influence of religions on academia.
