Remove all Geocities Sites from your Directories

Its kinda important that directory owners out there work at removing all the dead sites that are the result of the closing of geocities.

    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities/close/

We've been working for over a week now to remove these sites since they have just completely gone DEAD...

Likewise people that had geocities hosted sites should contact directories that they may have paid to be listed in with any new or updated links.

    Thanks!

    Thx for the tip... :)

though we didnt accept very many except 1-2 members from here and they have contacted us
and we have changed the listing for them as some went to googles free pages..

PS... good directory owners should run validation on all links every 30 days as well as check
for recently dropped domains listed within there directory.

    thx

Need server scripts to do this. That's probably the most painless way. It would suck to do this manually.

Good advise for all directory owners Mia. I'd give you some rep but it won't let me.

Another thing to do, is to check as to whether or not the content is really good, and see if it has been archived.
If so, then change url to the archives :)

Its a simple one line punch at the mysql level. Let's wait to see how things get processed, until then relax! :)

See if you can set them all back to pending (using a script) and then e-mail all of them to see if they need their link updated.

That way you keep loyalty, potentially sell additional links and keep your directory full. I'd even add a link at the bottom to a web hosting affiliate site, just in case they still need hosting. Sign up for one or two if you haven't already and "provide your customers options".

Looks like DMOZ is way behind the mark on removing all the dead Geocities sites... Lots of dead links over there.

Don't believe the Dmoz, the highlight below is probably crap and paid listing.

Already have a policy to not accept sites hosted on free services such as Geocities or Blogger. Hence this issue does not arise at all :)
