Remote Domain Registration...? Completely Lost

Kind of difficult to explain what I'm looking for... sorry if it sounds confusing. And I'm sorry if this isn't the best section to place it in.

I'm creating a Wordpress blog management utility for a certain audience (nothing to do with IM). I'd like the user of the utility to be able to either continue their existing blog or be able to go through the steps of creating a new one using the application. I can think of many different ways to remotely setup hosting (reseller packages, free servers, running my own server or VPS, etc) but when it comes to registering a domain name through an application; I have no idea.

I know there's a lot of fly-by-night hosting companys that are somehow able to accomplish this through their own websites without becoming official domain registrars. What types of services are they using, which ones are actually reliable and how exactly do they work?

I don't really care if I'm earning a commission off of the domains or not, as long as it's reasonably priced for the people who will be using the software.

I'm sure there's tons of tutorials on how to do this online, I just have no idea how to compress what I'm looking for into a phrase small enough to search Google for.
