    You can use a Telnet/SSH client such as PuTTY. As per the warning on that site the use of such software may not be allowed in some countries where encryption is prohibited.

    You can use FreeNX to connect remotely. Personally I have never used it.

    set up a vnc server. Gives you GUI access

    There are two native ways to have a remote accees:
    -SSH clinent - text based
    -Remove X-Client - you can run GUI remotely.

    Putty will be the most simple solution. It is easy to download and install. After installation, just give your Hostname/IPaddress in the space provided, give the SSH port and then click on the button "open". You will get a terminal with a prompt to enter password.

    teamviewer also has a working version for linux distros now, which is probably the simplest way to get gui remote access
