first of all you should not have given him advance payment. Secondly you may trust the one who has already been working as freelancer and has a proofread records.

I hope you've learned a valuable lesson with this mishap. REMEMBER, never; I repeat, NEVER pay upfront for SEO work; and specially to freelancers. (a company is a different thing, but one has to be very alert in that case too) For hiring SEO expert (or professional SEO), first ask him whether if he could show you some of his work samples or client testimonials. Plus, also make a brief agreement (before starting the work) for SEO targets you want him to achieve and payment mode (you can decide to pay weekly or monthly, whichever is convenient). Good luck,
