hello, I'm confused with this and please some expert here tell me the correct answer. Do irrelevant back links help to increase my SERP rank? I've seen some people say that irrelevant back links carry a less weight. So doing social bookmarking/forum posting etc are also building a massive amount of irrelevant back links, Isn't it? What is the truth? Do they carry the same weight? Thanks in advance!

Irrelevant backlinks carry less or no weight. Go for quality links. It could be hard to get them but they are worth it ;) :)

    Hi,

Irrelevant backlinks can give you traffics only, because SEs will ignore all irrelevant links.

If you are looking for PR juice and promote your site in SERPs then you should try to get relevant backlinks only.

    Thanks

No irrelevant backlinks and relevant backlinks does not carry same weight. If the link of your site is there in a site which is not related to your site, google will consider that link as the backlink of your site but in search engines it will not help you a lot. I mean you will not get traffic on your selected keyword throug search engine. So fact is that relevant backlinks are the ideal one

Links are links (with some minor exceptions). The SE's can not differentiate relevance, and for them to say they can is nothing but FUD.

Do some free association. Anything can have relevance to anything.

    paper - tiger - stripes - stars - astronomy - science - fiction - fantasy - sex - gender - type - keyboard - computer - Internet.......

In that list where do you find relevance? I am sure that the Google programmers are good, but language and thought are better!!

There is still weight from this link however when it won't be as good as links from relevant sites and sites with high PR.

Depends on what you mean by relevant. In terms of serps, much depends on the anchor text, even if the site you place links on is thematically not related to yours, there's still some weight to be pulled by the link as being anchored.

Yes, I am sure, IRRELEVANT backlinks (From Quality sites) will help a lot to increase SERP.
I had bring one of my site from 3rd page to #2 with the help of IRRLEVANT backlinks + few article submission(RELEVANT) submissions only.

It depends on what you are calling irrelevant backlinks... There are different definitions and different levels of relevancy. There are multiple relevancy factors at play here.

For example, if I am trying to get a URL on my site to rank for "video games" then having links that point to my URL with the link text "click here" is NOT going to help me rank for "video games"... It's going to help me rank for "click here".

If I get a link on a mortgage loans site pointing to my video game URL with the link text of "video games" this WILL help me rank for the keyword phrase "video games". But it won't help me as much as it would if I had a link on gamestop.com pointing to my URL with the link text of "video games".

IMO having the targeted keyword phrase as the link text (or a slight variation or part of the phrase as the link text) is the most important factor of the two (i.e. carries the most weight)... having the page where that link "lives" be related or relevant to the topic of my URL that the link is pointing to is secondary and gives the link an added boost.

    Link Is Still A Link.

Relevant links carries more weight compared to irrelevant links. If you get anchored link from irrelevant site, it will still increase your SERP ranking.
