related keywords have a negative effect?

    Hello,

If I had a website where the keywords I wanted to target were fairly related.

    Skate, Skateing, skaters

would having keywords that are similiar have any negative effect on search engines? Thinking of placing the similiar keywords in the Meta keyword/description and also in the main body of the website.

    Thanks

    FF

Don't worry about meta tags so much. None of the major search engines are using them for relevancy calculations (although Google does use them as the text returned on their SERPs).

As for the main body, just use your keywords naturally. Write for your website visitors, not for the search engines.

I think that using related keywords can actually help you in the SERPs - and, not coincidentally, this is true of quality content, as well. If you were simply writing an article about skaters, for instance, and weren't concerned about the SERPs, you'd more than likely use the words "skate" and "skating" in the article, as well. In fact, you can do a 'tilde search' in Google to determine which keywords they see as related - for example, enter "~skate" in the search field, and any related keywords will be highlighted in the SERPs that are returned. :)
