    I just want to know what exactly means while we put same page link in rel=canonical tag. I checked on word press blogs each category and tag url having same page(that specific tag and category) link in that page.

    So lets suppose www.xyz.com is my page url in that particular url same link is mentioned in rel=canonical tag what exactly that means.

    Link canonical is used when you have highly similar page content on your website and want Google to index only version of the page.

    Ex- In Ecommerce websites, one page displays product in alphabetical order and other page displays the same product by price, in this case, content on both the pages are the same except their visibility order.

    Now, by using link rel="canonical", we can inform Google that content on the both pages are same, and inform them to rank well one page out of the two to rank well in Google.

    How you implement it?
    Well, there are two ways, but i prefer adding rel="canonical" link in the head of non-canonical version of the page (page you do not want to rank in Google).

    Link code to add:-
    <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/product.php?item=mobile-phone"/>

    Read what google says about it- http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394

    First, rel=canonical are only used when you have duplicate content on your website and tell Google to rank one of them higher in SERP.

    Second, if you have found a website using rel= canonical link with no duplicate content, i am sure they still don't bear any SEO advantage.

    Note: can you share this websites?
