Hi, So this didn't happen to me, but someone I know & he wants this domain back. I'm wondering if anyone here is a domain expert & knows what happened or how to get the domain back. He back ordered & registered the domain through www.domainsatcost.ca back in Nov. 2011. The TLD .XXX wasn't supposed to go live until Dec. 2011. He suddenly found out in April of this year that they gave the domain to someone else. They said, "was not accepted by the registry because it was previously reserved." How can they take money from him & NOT know that the domain was registered to someone else? Was it, or did someone give them more money for the domain? They gave him his money back, but he wants the domain. I will be filing a complaint with Internic, but I wanted to know what you guys think first. Thanks Michelle
If the domain was registered/reserved by someone else at a different registrar then they might not have had up to date info to be able to say "no sorry, thats already reserved". On the other hand, yeah - they might have received more money for it from someone else, or one of the admins thought it was a good name and kept it for themselves. Either way its going to be extremely hard to prove. Whilst its not what you want to hear, you might be best to roll with the punch this time and move on.
^^ This. Realistically, OP, your friend won't be able to get that domain. And that domain provider isn't going to do more than maybe give credit for a free domain registration, which is rare for this exact situation. It actually can happen anywhere with any extension. It's really hit or miss. And no, they didn't steal the domain name, even though one may feel that way.
Hi, He received an e-mail stating he got the domain. Now granted this is a generic e-mail probably meant for domains that are available for purchase right away, but he wasn't even notified when he lost the domain, so it wasn't until April that he found out he didn't have it. They claim they sent out a notice, he says he never received it. It was a $229 purchase. Anyway, thanks Michelle
