I read a interesting blog post about registering typos of your URL to boost traffic: http://www.internetblog.org.uk/post/1072/register-typo-domains-to-increase-site-traffic What do you guys think about this? My site gets about 500 visits per day and this looks like an interesting way to get more visitors. It at least looks like it's worth trying.
i have also heard of this but am not sure if it would make much difference as google gives closest fits as search alternatives anyway. could be wrong though!
I read the blog post that you were referring to and although I agree that it could be a good strategy for some domains. Its simply not a strategy that could be used by everyone. What is your domain name to begin with? Is it something that could be easily misspelled? Does the misspelling of the said domain name have popularity behind it? Take for example the situation between JohnChow.com and JohnCow.com. John Chow is a very popular and well respected internet marketer. "John Cow" does not exist in real life. JohnCow.com is actually run by Jason Katzerback and he gained popularity by using the misspelling of a popular blogger to raise his page rank. John Chow has publicly stated that he knows that Jason Katzerback is essentially riding his coat-tails to gain popularity - and every experienced person in the internet marketing field knows this. So you would need to ask yourself if it is really worth it to misspell a domain to just get visitors - for me, I prefer to gain popularity on my own merits. By the way, have a look at JohnCow.com - and see when it was last updated. Regards Vahid Lancaster (my domain and me are the same)
John Cow became popular when John Chow's blog get G sandboxed/banned or whatever like 2 or 3 years ago.
How much direct traffic are you getting? For this to be really powerful, you need to have lots of people directly going to your website. If you aren't getting much traffic as-is, then it would be a waste of $9 (the cost of the domain name).
Much better places to focus your efforts. Chances are, not too many type in your domain directly, so the chances of them misspelling are pretty low. For better results, go for a more popular site and get a misspelling that is one letter off. So for DigitalPoint.com, register DigitalPoiny.com (see the y is next to the t so it is much more likely mistyped than say digitalpoina.com
