Registering first domain of my life - need help, suggestions, warnings and more.

    Hello Friends,
This is my first thread and my reason to join digital point, though I wish to stay here much much longer.
Before posting this thread I looked at many threads in DP and searched on net for suitable domain registeration sites and web hosting, but more I looked more I got confused. So please help me. I am totally new to this so if my question sounds really stupid then please bear with me.

I live in India (New Delhi as of now) and I am looking for some reliable domain registration. I wish to keep the domain for couple of years atleast but I should have flexibility of selling/moving it. I want to start with just one domain but in a year's time would like to increase this number to 10. Though I would like to have a cheap deal but I am ready to spend some extra bucks for reliability and peace of my mind.

I am also looking for a web hosting site with good reputation. I plan to start a blog, so I won't be needing lot of storage space for some time (i guess).
I hope I have given enough description of my problem. So if you have any experience then please help me.
    Thanks

    Jack

GoDaddy dot com is your friend here.

Many members will tell you it's the most reliable source for domain names. Don't forget to check our coupon code thread here at DP.

By the way, it's possible not to get an answer in less than 7 hours, especially if you're posting questions which are already answered many time. The best skill a new member can have is to know how to use the search option.

I have seen recommendations for namecheap as a domain registrar, although I don't use them myself. Many use GoDaddy although I personally try to stay away from them.

Your hosting needs sound very minimal. I would look around for others from India, see if they recommen anyone, and/or PM them to see who they use.

I agree, godaddy are the best. To register is a bit confusing, but just take your time when you navigate the site.
If you have a domain name in mind, be ready to buy it shortly after searching, as there seems to be some kind of possible risk of the domain being taken if you search, then wait to buy.

Thanks alot for the replies. I really appreciate your help.

@tomzx: Even though I live in India there is a tax related issue if i plan to put on google adsense on my site hosted by some US based company. So I have doubt that buying domain names from US based site would also fall into that adsense TOS or not. So just to avoid it all together I was thinking of registering at some indian sites and so was looking for someone from India to help me out.

I had the exact same question when I went to register to adsense. What they say is if you OWN a business there, or a TEAM which work for you there. It's fine to purchase from there, buy hosting there and everything, but you cannot have your own earning in the USA.

I use godaddy as it seems to have the easiest control panel and is very easy to move around.

thanks a lot guys for all your help. I think i will go with godaddy. They have cheap rates and are reliable. I check some indian hosting sites but i don't know how reliable they are and peace of mind is more important then few bucks.

yes good thinking Jack but make sure you dont use Godaddy for hosting.

I suggest you use hosting from another member so that if you need any help they can be there for you to lend you a hand that other Hosts would not provide!

    I do know that
Crazy Rob and Iowa Dawg offer reliable Hosting - might want to ask them

personally i would always go with registerfly.com to register your domain name, you can get a free host for a blog anywhere so you dont need to outlay any money to start with, thats how i initially started then moved on to paid hosting

Havent decided much about the requirements yet. But I am planning to have 4-5 blogs - mostly text based. so I guess half a GB of capacity is good enough. But I would need good data transfer limit. I check at godaddy at they have nice starting offer at 500MB capacity and 250GB transfer. Will PM you as soon as I decide on my requirements.

It seems that you are based in India. Where is your office?
