How do I go about starting up on this? What do I need to register the 2 names we have (One is full name, other is abbreviation of the original name). Secondly, our logo must be trademarked. The product is a clothing line. Anyone got some real good information on how I need to get started and how much this stuff cost?
If you're in the US, you register your marks with the USPTO (www.uspto.gov). Assuming that you're only considering one class of goods, you'll need to register 3 marks (one for the full name, one for the abbreviation and one for the logo). The filing fee for each trademark runs either $275 or $325 depending on how you file. I would recommend that, particularly if you haven't done this before, and you want it done correctly (particularly in light of recent TTAB decisions) that you have an attorney who files a lot of trademarks do the filings for you. Hiring a lawyer to do it costs more, of course, but then you don't have to worry about if you've done it right. Let me know if you have other questions.
