Well you can google search the names to see if there is undesirable (or desirable) talk around it. You can also check archive.org to see if there's something bad on the history of the website Otherwise, I don't really see a problem with it
expire domain can be a great deal, in the domain world , the older , the better, when u reg a new domain, its gonne take a long time till google will start to respect you, expire domains have age, sometime backlinks, pagerank , and even traffic its true that google in 80 % of the times will erase the old pagerank ( there are ways to try to avoid it) the only problem, that could be , is bad history, if a the domain have been used for spam,ilegal stuff, etc etc but like the user before me wrote, its pretty easy to check it out, and so you should,

If you can still find it in google.. Then it has not been banned. But if that is the domain that you are looking to buy.. Then you are out of luck.. It has been renewed so it expires on 1th of April 2010..
I recently dabbed into buying dropped domain for SEO purposes - building up the site, and linking up with my other sites etc. I think it is good, so long the site wasn't penalized by big G earlier.
