Register.com and domain transfers

I recently sold 3 O.P sites, because I hate the business. Shady wire transfers and a general feeling of moral unrest.

So I'm on the phone to register.com for them to e-mail me the domain transfer request, when they inform me it's $200 per site, admin fee, (Because it's just that much work!)

Being one to always come up with creative alternatives to paying fee's, I suggest the following.

Me - "So, if I transfer the domains to another hosting company and then transfer to my buyer, I avoid your $200 transfer fee, correct?"

Customer support - "One moment please, let me talk to my supervisor."

(5 minutes later, listening to Kenny.G)

Customer support - "Yes, thats correct and it makes no sense, but correct."

    Me - Phone clicks dead.

    Cool. Gotta love nonsensical rules.

Wah! I didn't know Register.com charges $200 for domain transfers! :( It's free in a lot of registrars. How much work do they have to do in transferring anyway? :(

I'd guess about 10 hours, paying $20 bucks an hour, it's obviously extremely complex and time consuming. lol.

How crazy can a major corporation be that, rather than tell my buyer to stick with the company and continue paying hosting, I have to transfer the whole site, lock, stock and barrell. By the way, it's $35 buck's a month, hosting, through them to have any kind of SQL database. Drives me nut'z this kind of idiocracy.

(Why did I do it? They've were my lucky rabbit's foot in the early days and I'm crazy like that.)

    OK let me clarify something.
To do a transfer of registrant fee was 200.00 per domain name, BECAUSE the register.com system was not set up to do it electronically.
So therefore it was all manual paperwork involved with the Transfer.
THAT being said, since Aug 2005, over 80% of register.coms acount have beem moved into a new system, where, all you have to do now is click on the transfer of registrant link, and, VOLIA! Transfer of registrant complete and NO FEE!!!!
And the registration is 19.99 yr OR Less at register.com.

I did a web for someone who registered their domain with register.com for $35 dollars a year. When it came time to reregister it I was going to move. After being on phone for long time they decided they could nearly match the other registrars cost so I did not move. The next year they would not match so we moved to Godaddy.
