Register a domain name for a client?

I am designing a site for a client and they need a domain name. I would like to handle it for them and make this entire process as smooth as possible, but is it abnormal? Does the designer normally register the domain name for the client or does the designer request the client register it on their own? If the designer does it, who is listed as for the contacts - the client or the designer?

katie, I used to do this quite a bit. In the early 2000s, I would register a name, build a site with branding and everything else, and resell the entire thing. I'd register it under my name and simply transfer it over after the purchase. I just required them to create a godaddy account.
