I will never buy anything marketed to me over SMS. It's the most annoying kind of spam that beeps when you are in the middle of something.

    There better be...

In addition to general guidelines provided by the Mobile Marketing Association, each country has its own guidelines.

Some, for example the UK, state that you can send an SMS to a customer or a potential customer who has given you their number as part of a negotiation.

Some, for example the US, state that you must have the explicit permission from the mobile user through a mobile handshake (i.e. an opt-in process conducted via sms).

So, it depends where you would be launching your service.

As long as the numbers are opt in you will not have a problem, especially with UK numbers.

We did alot of SMS marketing about 2 years ago when it was new but the results declined dramatically over a 6 month period.

I guess there is a market for SMS spam filters if marketing by SMS becomes mainstream.

Note: i know sms marketing already exists.

With the exception of the US, SMS *is* already mainstream.

Whilst there definitely would be a market for spam filters, it is not as easy as with email (if possible at all).

Although i did not like it at first, the US network's attitude is quite good. They enforce a system whereby every message has to be sent through a short code program and any service which involves recurrent delivery (e.g. every week) is opted into.
