It seems they don't really look at all the links you have. It shows 34 for one of my sites. Yet I know I have more than that. And it's been like that for a about a year...in that time my site has grown exponentially.

Yes many are from directories, but some from quality blogs, articles, etc..

Can someone shed some light on this?

Google backlinks is just like the PR on the toolbar. It only gets updated every so often.

If you want an accurate account of how many backlinks you have check MSN and Yahoo and comapre them.

But dont get hung up on looking at google for backlinks because its useless.

And just because they only show you a few, doesn't mean they only found (and use for ranking computation) a few. They just don't like showing everything to us. Use Yahoo Site Explorer instead. Google will have all of those links too.

Well, Yahoo does make me feel a little better.. It shows a couple of thousand.

That is why I found Google so disproportionate.(sp)

Google will probably see the most out of all of them but it shows the least, 34 Google backlinks is actually not that bad, you may find that the figure increases in the new year.

    Forget Google when checking backlinks..
MSN {Live} and Yahoo! Site Explore is best combination for finding detailed info about your inbound links. :)

Yep - Google intentionally shows way fewer backlinks than they know about -- word is they don't show all of them bedause they want websters to concentrate on quality content rather than developing links in order to create more useful sites for users :)

google updates backlinks 3-4 times a year, and it shows only some of the links, probably most significant.

I wouldn't even go that far. Googles PR is more accurate and fresh then the data google shows for backlinks.

Its worthless. They might as well take the operator out.

Google likes those backlinks from PR3 and above pages, so if you spend some money and buy some links from PR4, you will see your backlinks boost in google in a few days.
