I couldn't stand not to try this.

Got an edu linking to me in under 5 minutes. It was using Awstats which is live so the link to my site showed up immediately in the referrers and I only went to it twice from my page.

Is it better if I remove the link from my page so that the edu links to me but I don't link to it? Or does that not make a difference?

Yes, it would be better if you weren't reciprocating the link. Much better.

This is one method on how spammers rank for meds and gambling related keywords. There are a ton of other methods, but this is one of them.

Most referrer spam doesn't link out to anyone. It's merely a matter of changing the headers sent out by your browser, and it's often automated on a large scale. I often get the same referrer spam hitting me across several unrelated sites.

There are still so many webmasters out there leaving their stats live, completely oblivious to how their sites are being exploited.
