Referral spamming does work. You have to know who to go after and how to do it correctly. Just unleashing a flood of referral spams on every target possible isnt going to get you far. Just from the fact that you couldnt even get your website indexed in google shows you didnt go at the right way at all. There is a reason why its a huge 'problem' as everyone calls it is still used widely and isn't going nowhere anytime soon. Just to add another quick note, if you were spamming webalizer or something like that, thats probably why you concluded such poor results.

Referral Spamming does work by making thousands of webmasters firewall your IP's. It is the equivolent of telemarketing and you know how much people love that.

    Keep it up.

Ref spamming works like a charm, but you need to know what you are doing :)

I agree the test was limited - I hopefully have the phrase "basic referrer spamming" as seen to be inneffective.

I appreciate that a more aggressive application is likely to yield some results, but I figure this is going to remain a "fringe" tactic rather than go mainstream - which would be frightening. :)

Boy I hope you are right.

You mentioned Webalizer in your blog or first post. Would program you used show the spam in Webalizer and not Awstats? I have blocked a spammer by IP and he hits over and over, logs shows he gets a 403, does not show up in Awstats but does in Webalizer. It is perplexing to me.

Well Brian, I have seen some of the bigger websites that have great serps show loads of backlinks from sats of other websites using ref spamming obviously, some site have hundreds of thousands of backlinks, about amongst these, there are the relevant sites backlinks as well, so one does not know for sure how much weight is given to these irrelevant backlinks form the stas pages of sites.

I don't think they account for much as you said, but can make a difference in serps if other factors are comman.

    Nope, not at all.

But I don't think so-called "black hat SEO" is spam.

Hmm let me guess, you are a "grey hat SEO" like me.

I don't think "black hat SEO" is spam either, but thats what most people(read guys you can't get any sites in serps) think.

Well I don't really asign labels to stuff. But I don't do anything that would risk a client's site being banned. Unless of course they want me to....which is never. :D

manipulating pages is considered white hat seo...gray hat is using techniques that would seem questionable...like small unreadable text....
