referral contest help

I'm about to start a referral contest for my forum, but I need to get some idea of how to get contestants.

What prizes should I offer?

 

Cash prizes are always good but if you can give niche related gifts then also people would enter the contest

It's a chat forum

 

Cash or maybe IPOD shuffle

 

I was considering cash.
How much money would make it attractive?

I'm also considering this for a rule:
Referrals should have to post a couple of posts, and be active for a couple of days.

 

Can you track that if yes then thats a good rule

50$ - 100$ are good attractive prizes you can have top 3 positions

 

Cash, or gift cards. You could offer three winners the following: Amazon.com gift card, iTunes gift card, and a gift card for another shop.

It's also not a bad idea to ask your members what they would compete for. Afterall, they are the ones who know what they want the most. If you offer exactly what they want, they will be willing to work harder.

Referrals should be active for 5 days and post 5 postings to be counted

Yeah, that sounds pretty good.

It doesn't always work though. I'm holding a three-month-long contest right now with over $600 in prizes (three winners) and it's not the greatest thing. But it is keeping us alive for now, so to speak.
