Most people use Google in India....not many local language sites here.

I guess search preferences in India are same as in US/Europe as English is widely used by Indians on the net.

    Hello Sachin410

thanks for info, what is the most commonly used site in India, As far as I know (it means very little) you have numerous local idioms over there, but most (should I say many) indian people understand english. Do you have a 'common' site in english ?

Anyway, I would be interested by a list of commonly used indian websites, even not in English (hindi or others)

    thanks for your help

There is a big difference between China and India..

Unlike in China where Mandarin is spoken by 90% of the people, India has hundreds of languages.

Hindi is our national language, but it is mother tongue of only around 40% of the Indians.

Indian webmasters prefer to make sites in English rather than any other Indian language.

Take a look at Alexa's top sites rankings in India... you will get an idea about Indian surfing habits.

    I know, and I hope so ...!!!
Now that is an unexpected (for me) characteristic of indian surf habits....! how much you guys are using some of the most commonly used websites by occidental countries. But could this be explained because of alexa's toolbar working only for browsers running latin alphabet

Neither do I, but I sincerely would like to..

Anyway, I currently am facing the same kind of problem (but reversed) for my website in signature, I thought europeans would rather understand each others in English rather than in their native languages which seems to be not really true. For example, many french webmasters have problems understanding english, so do spanish and German ones. which makes it difficult for me....:(

India and Europe also are really different :D:D

    Hello Sweb

Thanks for your answer. I did learn very little russian at school, I am able to follow an extremely simple converation but (I aplogize for this) I face great difficulties for the reading of cyrillic alphabet.

Could you send the url for 'site submit' in yandex and rambler if exist and I will try something like this http://www.netdynamics.eu/forum/topic38.html
for your russian sites also . I am interested in sharink links across borders, or in giving people the correct procedure to do so.

    thanks in advance.

for india i think khoz is a famous search engine! never used though!
    google.com or .co.in works fine!
but then if you want to get into the chinese search engines, i would suggest you to buy chinese site's backlinks, that will give the chinese spiders a call i guess!

india don't have a specific search engine, as someone pointed out, our constitution says we have 23 national language and hindi is our official language. so it is almost impossible to have a language specific search engine in india:)
[guys please read the constitution, don't ask me to give a proof of the statements, i got this from a forum, and there everyone accepted it, i don't have the time to read the constitution and check this is right or not!]

I am from India. I did a market study in my city in early 2006 (sample size 30 Cyber cafes, 6 Local ISP's and 20000 individuals). This is what we found.

For Search : 80% use Google - 15% Yahoo - Rest on MSN, Rediff.com etc

For Email : 34% uses Yahoo, 26% uses hotmail, 14% uses Rediff, 12% uses Sify, 6% uses Sancharnet, 6% uses IndiaTimes, and 2% use their own mail box or other providers.
