With today Enom name server problems
    (see http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=626713)
my 4 domains were not accessible today from many locations for at least 6 hours.

I assume a lot of people had the same problem since many domain registars are Enom resellers and use Enom DNS servers.

The question is. What is correct way to specify redundant DNS servers with registars like namecheap? Is providing custom DNS servers like

    ns1.name-services.com
    ns1.another-dns-serever.com
    ns2.name-services.com
    ns2.another-dns-serever.com
    ...

sufficient? Or are there any better solutions?

Trency, do not mis-lead the thread starter

henryb, you need to make sure that both of your DNS provider accept zone transfer. That means one of your DNS provider will be master and another will be slave. As such, when any changes make to the master, the slave will be able to capture the changes.

eNom does not allow any zone transfer. So there is two dns provider that can make this work is www.everydns.com & www.editdns.com

    Enjoy!

Somehow I was under impression that I can set up two DNS servers to be primary servers, not only one as a master and another one as a slave.

I have multiple domain names. As I said, because of the problems with enom my domain names were not resolved. If it would be not only ns1.name-services.com, but ns1.everydns.com, for example, then everydns would have done the work.

unless you are moving soon, you could also help out a little bit by increasing the ttl on your records. that way, at least the customers of the big isp's will ride out any storm without knowing the difference because of the dns cache on their isp dns caches.
