Howdy folks, Over the past month I've developed a browser plug-in (currently only working on IE but could be ported to Mozilla / Firefox and WebKit as well) that enables users to play ANY type of media (flv, swf, wmv, avi, etc.) using a single embedded object, sort of one plug-in to play them all… In theory this will allow webmasters (such as yourself) to embed any type of media regardless of its type. This is all well in theory, but in practice users will have to install the plug-in in order to view the embedded media. During testing I've found a serious security flaw in the plug-in that enabled me to omit (or even modify) the referrer header request, which means that anyone could use this plug-in to hotlink any media hosted on another server and get away with it scotch free by bypassing any htaccess / mod_rewrite / whatever security measure (except for cookie / password authentication, which is only used for pay-for-content sites at the moment). Being that I run a few legal tube sites I've immediately recognizes both the benefits and dangers of this plug-in: honest webmasters could embed any type of media (AVI, FLV, MOV, etc) using a single embedded object, and the less honest webmaster could simply hotlink to other peoples content without ever getting caught or stopped, or somewhere in the middle kind of webmaster who run legal tube site (like myself) could embed promotional content movies directly from my affiliates, thus promoting the affiliates without the need to convert the promo material to FLV or incurring the additional bandwidth myself (what traditional TGP/CJ sites have been doing since the beginning of the internet by linking to their affiliates "free gallery" landing pages). I would like to release the plug-in under the GNU's GPL open source license but before I unleash it to the public (which will require me a ton more work) I have a few questions for all you webmasters (since you'll be the means of distributing this plug-in): 1. Would YOU be interested in using this plug-in on any of your web-sites? 2. Would YOU oppose this plug-in (and persecute) any sites using this plug-in? 3. Assuming that I would fix the referrer spoofing bug, how would you answer the two previous questions? 4. Would any of you be interested in helping out by beta testing the plug-in? 5. Do you have any suggestions / improvements for my one media player plug-in to play them all (right now you can access the player's interface using javascript and are able to change the volume, video size, video seeker, auto-play, image-placeholder, switch to real full screen, and I'm working on the ability to customize the player's GUI with simple XML skin and adding pre-roll ads and overlay banners ads option). Please rest assure that I will not release the plug-in as is, or even at all (since it would require more work on my end), unless I see a genuine interest in the plug-in (either as is or modified version), so I'm counting on your feedback to make my decision. PS. If you are afraid to post your true opinion on this board, please email me at: oneplugin [at] gmail [dot] com
