Redirects to internal pages OK?

There is a company that uses AdWords and they've bought a stack of keyword rich domains and then put up adwords pointing into their main site.

    Is this legit?

I've filtered the main site but it's such a battle to keep up with their domain buying that I'm hoping it's not.

I can see the advantage - they keep their ads on my site, they shorten their urls - but it's also deceptive: You click on a link and go to another site, although I suspect most users wouldn't notice.

Could you explain that a little more - I'm not sure I understand.

    OK

    A company has a site called abc.com
And on that site there is a page called abc.com/internal/offers/nov2005/widgets.php

They have a domain called betterwidgets.com
And they promote that site using AdWords

But when you click on the ad you go straight to abc.com/internal/offers/nov2005/widgets.php

Is that legit? Or should I be taken to betterwidgets.com and no further?

I'd say they may be operating a bit outside of the rules. I bolded statement I think applies to their situation.

I often use the primary url as the display url then direct people who click on the ads to the best page within the site - but that's the key - I'm taking them to a location that's within the display url, not a different URL all together.

I pulled the above quote from here if you want to do some more digging.

That page is referring to Google Analytics. What they are doing is against the rules. Google will inactivate their ads once they find out.

An example of how much Google won't like that... I had ads setup with domain1.com as the display URL. I have an afilliate tracking solution on domain2.com, so I setup an affiliate link for google that redirects to domain1.com. Since the ad stopped at domain2.com before redirecting to domain2.com Google inactivated the ad.

Yea, it's not legit to use keywords that have nothing to do with their site. OR having the display URL set for instance as "Ebay.com" and then it leads to their site, WHICH is NOT ebay, and has links to ebay. That would also be illegal.

    Hope that helps.

Now I see where reporting can become useful. Just send an anonymous report to Google. If they find something wrong with it, they'll take care of your "competition" for ya! :D
