Redirecting Homepage when launching new site

    Hello,

If I'm putting up a new site and the Homepage URL is staying the same, does a 301 still need to be implemented or do I just need to point the existing URL at the new server? Homepage of the old site ranks well in it's category and I want to make sure to preserve rank and traffic.

    TIA!

Thank you. Is a 301 needed even if the homepage url of the new site will be the same as the old one? A 301 is already being implemented for the new homepage to redirect non-www to www.

I would suggest you to keep retaining the home page URL same. Because you have mentioned that it ranks higher, so there is chance to lose it's credibility even-though if you have done 301 re-direct. And multiple 301 re-directs is also not advisable.
