I've just redesigned the homepage of my site and wondered if anyone could let me know which one you like better. The old one was too "white" and glaring to me. I've just about killed myself redoing it - 6am and I haven't been to bed. Do you think the new one has too many colors going on or do they blend okay? Also, what do you think about placement of ads and such? There is still some work to do on it, but I need to get some sleep! Old design New design
I think it is a huge improvement. I am not a fan of the colour green, so the background is irritating but it is much better than the white. I would continue to experiment with the alternating colours in the content boxes on the page. It is much better than the previous white...
I love the new design... works well I think. I notice that you like me on my last design use style commands instead of placing it all in a CSS file... CSS file would help you experiment with colours across the board without amending any of the pages Now... go to bed!! Adam (the CSS toddler ::burp::)
Heh, thanks I'll consider changing the green background to something else. I'm so relieved to know you both think it's an improvement. There's nothing worse than spending hours on something then to have people go, "Oh, I liked the old one better!" I'm going to get a few hours sleep then play around with the colors some more. I am unsure of how to do this - I know a little CSS but am afraid of making the whole page CSS because of browser incompatibility. It seems like it would be more work than it's worth to make styles for each colored box? I am too new to CSS to really know.
The new design is definitely better. The colors look great to me. The Google ad may stand out better beneath the categories, I remember the article showing that's where people's eyes tend to look. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=3866
LOL...i didnt even notice there was google ads on the page....duh!!! I must take these freeeekin' sunglasses off. Nice design......and nice colours....you nearly got a klik from me..i am not sure if you would WANT googe ads to stand out...work well where they are....NEARLY hehe GEM
I didn't notice them either, I had to go back and check again. I would find a way to make them a little more noticeable while still maintaining the solid fit within your website. You can use an image to make a drop shadow or do some other tinkering to help it to 'stand out'.
Posting in this forum is great! I should've done it last time I did a redesign. If I ask friends or family I just get, "Sure, it's fine!" Thanks for the suggestion on the Google ads. I wonder if changing the color of the ads will do the trick?
<<If I ask friends or family I just get, "Sure, it's fine!">> Aren't you the lucky one......I just get pointing, and a lot of laughter even the cats screeeeech..."the colours ,the colours!!...meeee ow! Regards GEM
I really like the new design - much more appealing! Anyway, one thing I think you should change is make the titles of articles H3s instead of plain links. It would help draw attention to each article and would provide a bit of variation on the page. Use CSS to make those H3s look like what you would want them to look like. Maybe even a different font - I find "Trebuchet MS" quite nice for headings. You really should look into CSS more closely. Designing with CSS is much easier than you might think and if done correctly, it shouldn't be less browser compatible (in fact, quite the opposite). A great book is 'Designing with Web Standards' by Jeffrey Zeldman - well worth the read.
