redemption fee of $535 to get back domains (legalised extortion by fxdomains)

i have domains registered with fxdomains, i have had domains expire before , and they just go into the redemption period of 42 days, and i just renew them, at no extra cost than they would cost normally.

however i just had six domains expire, (they are still in the redemption period) and when i went to renew them a few days after they expired - the total came to $535.02 --
    THATS :-
FIVE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS AND TWO CENTS

all for just 6 (six) domains
i wrote to them and complained and explained the situation and told them i was leaving if they did not drop this fee and they said the fee would still be charged (which is a bit stupid since i have loadfs of domains registered with them)

    but is this enforceable ?
because i want the domains - but $535 dollars for 6 domains is legalised extortion.

when i took off 4 of the domains and tried to get only 2 of the domains renewed, it still charged me exactly the same amount - $535.02

so is there any way round this as this is obviously legalised extortion.

It'd be great if I could offer better advice, but if you look at internic (http://www.internic.net/problem_reports/p14.html), even they seem to indicate problems like this are better business bureau type-stuff.

Going to a lawyer is probably not worth $535, but if the domains are highly valuable, a lawyer may be able to get them on some other technicality.

I realize you feel that way. Yet, there is a reason why all that happened.

First, every domain name (especially .com) goes through a life cycle:

    http://www.icann.org/en/resources/registrars/gtld-lifecycle

If the domain name/s in question is currently in "redemption period", it typically costs the registrar
far more than their standard renewal fees to "redeem" them. Not many folks are aware of this, so
it stands to reason that some of them expect renewal and redemption fees to stay the same even
    though they're not.

Dividing $535 by 6 domain names gives $89.17 (roundoff) each. That's close enough to Go Daddy's
$80 redemption fee for that situation, which is probably what they're also charging FXDomains as a
    reseller of theirs.

However, are those domain names indeed in redemption period? If you do a WHOIS look up for each
of them and check their status lines, what do they say?

    Hello,
i did a whois lookup for each,
and the standard data says :-
    Registry Status: clientDeleteProhibited
    Registry Status: clientRenewProhibited
    Registry Status: clientTransferProhibited
    Registry Status: clientUpdateProhibited
    Created on: 01-Oct-08
    Expires on: 01-Oct-12
    Last Updated on: 14-Sep-11

    but when you click on
    "See Underlying Registry Data"
    it says

    Status: clientDeleteProhibited
    Status: clientRenewProhibited
    Status: clientTransferProhibited
    Status: clientUpdateProhibited
    Updated Date: 02-oct-2012
    Creation Date: 01-oct-2008
    Expiration Date: 01-oct-2013

so it has the expiry date as a year later.

absolutely nowhere does it mention the word "redemption"

this is what they said in the last response i got from them

"We will not be able to renew the domains in your account without the fee at this point."

"Typically, domains remain in customer accounts up to 43 days after the domain has expired. However,
after this time, the domain may or may not be released back to the registry, and removed from the customer.
Once the domain has been returned to the registry, it is held for an undetermined amount of time before it
will be released to the public and available for registration."

but it is not 43 days after it has expired - its just a few days (?)

so does that whois data help at all ?

It does. Alas, I wish I have better news.

It's like this: whatever Go Daddy says for the most part, their resellers have to follow no ifs
ands or buts. So if the domain names weren't renewed on time for whatever reason, yet are
still "salvageable" at that point, then it may cost more to get them back.

Here's Go Daddy's process of handling expired domain names, which all of their resellers have
    to follow as well:

    http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/608/what-is-your-process-for-handling-expired-domain-names

If all those domain names are beyond their 19th day of expiration, notice that part above re:
domain name/s on hold but subject to redemption fees. Unfortunately there's no law, ICANN
    or otherwise, specifically banning that.

In short, Go Daddy tries to make more money on the "backend" of things, which they pass on
to resellers who face this scenario you're going through. If the domain names aren't renewed
following Go Daddy's expiration policies above (however much it sucks) on time, then there is
essentially no way to get around those rather exorbitant fees.

At this point, your only options are to maybe backorder at Go Daddy, or wait until they all go
through their life cycle. Both, unfortunately, aren't guaranteed either.

And of course, one can vent. I don't know if that solves this problem, though.

    Good luck.

    thanks for that,
one of the domains they are "charging" me for is still online (its an ecommerce site) and ive paid for it, for another year, so their records are obviously wrong when they are charging me over $500 for a few domains, one of which is definitely online (because they have already charged me for it)

and also in the whois data looking at www.whois-search.com
    it says :-

"Please note: the owner of the domain name is specified in the "registrant" field.
In most cases, the Registrar is not the owner of domain names listed in this database."

    and in the "Registrant:" (field)
it has my personal name - so if i am the "owner of the domain name"
then surely they cannot hold me to ransome for my own property ?

this is not a play on words at all, as posession is 9/10ths of the law and if i am the "owner" then denying me of my property is theft and a civil tort

has anyone else had any experience in this type of situation that turned out in their favour ?

Are the high quality names? if not you may want to do as Max stated and simply let them die and register them again soon.

yes and no, the domain names on their own arent enormously valuable, but i think that someone will definitely register them when it comes to the deletion date just to try and get some traffic and send it to ppc or whatever,

i dont want to pay an extortionate amount, but at the same time i dont want to lose them after putting in so much work into them.

Aww that sucks! I am sorry OMG, I dont unserstand why it would start charge you the same amount rather you renew 2 domains or 6. It would make sense if it was truly $80/domain but it doesnt appear to be. Have you actually called and tried to talk on the phone? Often times I get way farther when I am talking to an actual person - harder to be brushed off when you are an angry voice instead of text.

Was the money taken out of your account after you renewed that domain name? If you have proof of that,
then you may have a chance.

Now, I'll warn you that this is going to add more frustration. But more often than not, the provider wants to
"prove to themselves" that the domain name was indeed paid for yet not renewed like it should have.

That, of course, means contacting them again. However, try to keep the emotional outbursts out and focus
on somehow...somehow...proving that the domain name was paid for and money taken from you.

Ask them to maybe check their billing records. If they still say there's no renewal payment and - again - the
money was debited from you, then ask if sending a copy of your form of payment (with credit card number
or similar blanked out) can help.

With luck, FXDomains might...might...at least see that error and resolve that for you without you having to
pay extra for that domain name that was renewed. They're not likely going to foot the bill for the other ones,
though, especially if those others indeed weren't renewed on time to begin with.

I know this is asking a lot. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide what's important for you in spite of how things
    turned out.

    many thanks,
    but,
i spent hours last night going through the admin last night, and it looks like i havent paid for it,
the reason the site is still online etc, is becaise the nameservers are set to fxdomains servers, but (i think) its the "A" record that is forwarded to the whitelabel comaonies servers (its a whitelabel ecommerce site) which is probably why the site is still online
one of the other domains that expired is literally exactly the same, except its offline (?)
the admin panel at fxdomains is not very clear at all or easy to access the information quickly.
i was actually thinking of phoning them last night and ready to do so but:-
    1. im in the uk and i would be on the phone for a while and the phone rates are not cheap and it would cost the amount of the 2 domains
    2. its very unlikely i would be able to speak to the right person (or so i thought)
the shopping cart system was fucked up on there, as well as generally not being able to order individual/or 2 domains out of the few, and so after hours of trying i found out that yes you are right you can get them individually at $90.17 each, or 2 for $180.34 - which i couldnt do before because the system they have was not working properly,

has anyone got any recomendations of good domain registrars to transfer all my domains to ?
i need one that is not going to try every angle in the book to try and have their clients over a barrel, which this obviously is, the same as trying a multitude of other things to squeeze every single penny out of you that they can, and i also need to be able to have adequate control of the domains/redirects from within the admin panel.

in the last response i got from them they said
"at this time" the charges are still applicable (approx)
so it doesnt mean they couldnt/wouldnt drop them, it means if they can get away with it then they will/can.

let me know if you have any other ideas/options as im obviously interested.
    anyone fancy DOS ?

are you sure about that - a domain expire - then it gets deleted - these are 2 different things - after it expires it goes into the redemption period before it gets deleted - and then it can be bought by someone else.

i know, like a month before its publicly available for re-registration, which is why in my case im uncertain as to exactly what took place. I didnt check the whois at the time, i just noticed it was directing all traffic to a different site...

Ive looked it up, i was wrong, namecheap does have a renewal system for dropped domains, Its just at the time, the names completely vanished from the account and as i had no intention of re-registering them i didnt bother to really worry about them.
