Record video on screen (similar to a screen capture)

I have some video that I have paid for, but can only watch it online and have no way of saving or downloading. The video is instructional video that I want to use for my own personal use and I do not want to have to login to watch it all the time.

The video plays in media player or real player, and I would like to screen capture certain points of the video.

Some files you can't download. E.g. go to launch.yahoo.com - the music videos they play you can't download coz the pc doesn t save the file - it streams it.

This only works about 50% of the time, but here goes.

Get Mozilla. Maybe Firefox will work, too. Go to the page in question. Use your mouse to select a little text right above and below the video. Then right-click on the selected text and choose "view selection source." That should display some of the HTML from the page, but probably only the HTML that controls the video. Look through it for the URL of the video. Copy it. Close the source window, get back to the main window. Paste in the URL. Hold down the SHIFT key and hit enter. Save the video.

The shift key tells Mozilla that you want to download the file instead of view it.

I think Screen VidShot will help you. It can capture window, region and all desktop. Allows to save screen capture to avi, asf, wmv. Quality of recording will not disappoint you.

Tried Vidshot following this recommendation. Did not work at all, in fact, it crashed my PC. Tired of pathetic recommendations and lame software that doesnt work? me too!

If anyone knows of any software that can actually record streaminig video from ONSCREEN source (where u can't know the URL), please post.

[EDIT: Thought I'd give Vidshot another chance. Reset my pc. This time when I start VidShot, it comes up with an error "application failed to initialize". wow. nice.]

[edit2: thought I'd give it yet another chance (call me stupid).. got it up and running finally. YAY! Tried to record my streaming online video. BUT.... after recording, the video part of the screen is blacked out during playback. Oh well.. Another cr*p software wth fake claims bites the dust.. ]

Windows Media Encoder is free, from Microsoft. It captures from onscreen sources, including audio if you set it up correctly. Unfortunately, I found it a bit hard to learn -- it was probably an hour before I settled on a video compression scheme that I liked, and another 3 or 4 hours before I had it capturing audio properly & consistently.

CamStudio 2.1 is still out there, and free. Later versions were not so hot. But the thing with CamStudio is that it captures video old-school. The codecs it uses give you grainy images, and huge file sizes. Not very optimized by today's standards. However, unlike Windows Media Encoder, I was able to get it working in about 2 minutes.

There are many options available, the most easy to get and use would be Mozilla.
