Recompile PHP with Plesk installed? Or find new host?

    Heya,

Hopefully someone will be able to help with this. Basically, it's a problem with the base setup of a virtual server.

Been having an ongoing problem with 1and1, where they don't have zip file support enabled in their Linux PHP installations. All that's needed is to recompile PHP with the --with-zip parameter, but due to Plesk being installed on the server this seems difficult to impossible to achieve, even with SSH access.

Calls to their technical team have only yielded two answers:

    1. They're not willing to recompile PHP, and don't know how to do it with Plesk there.
    2. They wouldn't recommend doing it yourself with Plesk there.

Desperately need to be able to handle zip files to continue developing the site (and it's a business site).

Are there any other web hosts people can recommend that are... good? Very difficult to find any sort of good review or comparison site for them that isn't just a content-lite affiliate link site.

Alternatively, is there a way of recompiling or changing PHP 5.1.6 with Plesk 9.0.1 installed to make it have zip file support?

    Thanks in advance.

Probably time to look for a new host if the current host won't help you. Personally, I use SolidNode.com as my shared host and have been pretty happy.
